Uses

Vetiver is a hardy grass that can survive both floods and droughts, making Haiti's climate particularly favorable for it. Vetiver helps prevent erosion and provides supplementary nutrients to the soil. Nearly half of the world's supply of vetiver essential oil is exported by Haiti.
Vetiver belongs to the grass family. It can develop roots that extend 2–4 meters deep, making it ideal for preventing erosion. Unlike most grasses, its roots grow vertically rather than horizontally. The essential oil extracted from the plant is distilled from its roots. The longer vetiver roots remain in the ground, the better the quality of oil they yield. Therefore, we pay our growers an extra bonus if they leave the roots in the ground longer. Ideally, vetiver should be harvested 12–18 months after planting.
